Subversive stitching
Women Power protest
'a chilled afternoon of stitching out most rebellious slogans'
Twat. (2018-19)
Embroidery thread, cotton aida, cotton jersey Primark pants
'TWAT' was a test piece that soon became a series of textile art in response to a range of activist themes across the exhibition and to the up-skirting bill that was voted out of parliament.
(Which has since been voted through after the dude who voted against it without even reading what it was about had a serious talking too! Yay!)
I created the stitch workshop as a safe way to explore sometimes difficult themes, whether that be a reclamation of words previously used as insults against women or to open up a dialogue about feminism across the globe and everything in between. I wanted to use this stitch in a fun and inclusive way and found that this medium transferred beautifully into braille.
With embroidery hoops at the ready and all materials provided it was a great way to say a big "Up Yours" to not being very lady like.
The pieces gloriously sat pride of place in the heart of the exhibition ‘Women Power Protest’.

'TWAT (Subversive Stitching) is series of embroideries and illustrations in the form of a workbook, created in response to the concept of subverting the perception of a traditionally gentle and feminine art medium. Although, this idea of feminist slogans in the form of cross stitch is not an entirely new one, Andrea will be using the principle to respond to the Arts Council Collection exhibition Women, Power, Protest. Inviting others to join in on her journey to break through barriers surrounding the constructed ideals of what is deemed feminine and lady like - to query what is “acceptable” female behaviour'
